Kerry is a Noongar Artist with family, country and cultural connections in the Wadjuk, Bindjareb, Yued, Wilman, Wardandi and Ballardong areas. Olivia is an Australian Artist with European heritage: Kerry and Olivia have successfully collaborated on several two way cultural learning projects. We see ourselves as ‘reconciliation in action’ as we learn from each other and then translate this into artworks. We both explore Western Australian nature & our relationship with it. We are both multidisciplinary artists , not limited to a specif material whether painting, sculpture, installation, murals, site specific, environmental for private or public art.
This six season calendar is extremely important to Nyoongar people, as it is a guide to what nature is doing at every stage of the year, as well as understanding respect for the land in relation to plant and animal fertility cycles and land and animal preservation.
We use elements of natural Australian bush plants, animals and sand to represent the 6 seasons which were recognised. Its about recgeneration of cultural knowledge for future generations, but also with the overlap of western ways and knowledge-empirical mathematics.
This installation highlights the endurance of language and culture that underlies our colonised country. It references Aboriginal cultural practices and the interconnectedness with nature that have been carried out for tens of thousands of years on Australian soil by Australia’s first nations people, thet oldest continuous culture on earth.
Despite a difficult and brutal clash of cultures and a history of government policies of denial, extermination and destruction, leaving us with a legacy of trauma and displaced people and culture, Kerry and Olivia look towards hope.
We try to find peace and meaning , trusth and beauty, and respect in each other’s culture.
